Puppytown, Growing Up – May 2008
What do puppies want to be when they grow up? From the folks that brought you Puppytown: The Movie, this
latest in the Puppytown series answers the question with rollicking clips of sled dogs, rescue dogs, agility dogs,
hunting dogs, and more backed by toe-tapping music. Seven segments, each introduced by young multiethnic
hosts, feature footage of dogs (and sometimes pups in training) demonstrating their skills. The guide-dog
segment touchingly depicts vision-impaired children interacting with both puppies and dogs wearing guide-dog
vests. Many of the songs offer encouragement and advice. For example, a firehouse Dalmatian rides in the
fire truck as catchy lyrics proclaim, “Don’t play with matches kids!”…the sharp colorful footage, memorable
songs, and dog’s-eye views of canines in action will captivate viewers.

This is one fetching puppy DVD—and it won’t chew your shoes, either. With pup-level handheld cameras, the
film captures a variety of darling puppies frisking and frolicking (sometimes in sunglasses and hats), while
catchy songs drive home such information as what puppies like to do, should eat, and must make (on the
grass, one hopes). In each of six chapters (e.g., "Puppy Playtime," "Chowtime, "Puppy Rules"), young children
interact with the pets and impart useful information, including the most important: "Help your parents clean up
after your puppy." Menus choices include a "Puppy Quiz" and "Interactive Puppy," a recap of a pup’s parts.
Although the DVD menus lists two chapters with the same number (three), an obvious mistake, this is an
educational, engaging, and doggone well-made introduction to puppies and their care. A CD of the songs is
included.

For families considering adopting a puppy, this DVD shows live-action footage of puppies of various breeds
(listed in the credits) participating in many activities, accompanied by ditties about the action taking place.
There are six sections, with a group of Caucasian children providing an introduction between them. “Welcome
to Puppytown” introduces two songs about pups. “Puppy Playtime” features songs about running, chasing,
and sleeping, “Puppy 101” covers puppy anatomy and the mess they can make. “Chowtime” explains what
they eat. “Puppy Rules” explains how to care for a pup and “Growing Up” rounds out the video footage.
Although this is all staged, the puppies and the children are charming. The ditties are accompanied by a
combo band and range in musical style from boogie-woogie to lullaby to zydeco. At the end of the production
there is an interactive quiz, a review of anatomy, and advice for parents. The CD features all the music from
the DVD. While the film offers only cursory information, youngsters will have fun watching and learn something
